Soil science is the study of soil as a natural resource on the surface of the earth including soil formation, classification and mapping; physical, chemical, biological and fertility properties of soils; and these properties in relation to the use and management of soils.

Aims

This course will help learners achieve the following:

  • Be familiar with the origins, characteristics and properties of soils and soil-less growing media
  • Be capable of manipulating the properties of soil to support crop production
  • Appreciate the importance of the practices and requirements of soil nutrition and cultivation for crop production
  • Develop safe working practices when dealing with machinery and agri-chemicals
  • Care and foster a respect for the environment as a finite resource
